Walk description:

Park in the car park behind the Golf Museum/ Sealife Centre. Turn to the right out of the car park along the footpath, keeping the water on your right. Superb views can be obtained looking back towards the town. The famous Old Course, where the British Open Championships are played, is on the left

The West Sands were used in the opening scenes of the film Chariots of Fire. The road along the West Sands is open to traffic so care should be exercised along the way. It has recently been resurfaced. West Sands is popular with kite and sand buggy enthusiasts.

To maintain the natural beauty of West Sands there is a dune stabilisation programme in place. All visitors should use the footpaths in place to access the beach. The Dunes at West Sands are internationally important and are part of the Firth of Tay and Eden Estuary Special Area for Conservation. St Andrews West Sands has won the much coveted Blue Flag Award for many years. Follow the footpath to the end of the road before returning the same way.

Additional notes:

There are toilets at the car park behind the Golf Museum. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club House is opposite the car park. Alternative parking is available in one of the parking areas along the West Sands. It is possible to have a meal in the Links Clubhouse near the start of the route, where the food and facilities are excellent.
