Hollowshot Lane

LOCALITY: Kingsclere, Hampshire
DISTANCE: 1.5 miles (2.41 km)
FACILITIES: Circular route, Parking, Suitable for wheelchairs, Pub

GRADIENT: Mostly flat
OS MAP: Basingstoke

Walk description:

Starting at St Mary's Church walk up George St to the Dell. Turn into the Dell and where the tarmac road turns right go straight on up the gravelled track [this is the original road to Basingstoke]. Track runs between hedges with occasional views until it descends to a crossing track by large fields. Turn right into Hollowshot Lane running through a small patch of woodland. Continue past the end of the Gallops onto a hard surfaced private road until you meet the B3051. Turn right and return along Swan St to St Mary's Church

Additional notes:

The initial part of the track is a bit rough but regularly used by local buggy users. At the junction with Hollowshot Lane look across the valley to the downland scarp where you can see the Coronation Copse - a planting of trees to form EIIR. The Gallops are the training ground for Park House Stables, one of the largest in Europe [trainer Andrew Balding]. Horses can be seen in training from 0700 to about 0930. The centre of Kingsclere is a conservation area - the varied brickwork is particularly interesting. Good pubs and shops.
