Eling Tide Mill & River Walk

LOCALITY: Totton, Hampshire
DISTANCE: 1.5 miles (2.41 km)
FACILITIES: Circular route, Parking, Suitable for wheelchairs, Toilets, Pub, Cafe

GRADIENT: A few ups & downs
OS MAP: New Forest

Walk description:

Eling Tide Mill is on the southern edge of the town of Totton & Eling, on the west side of the northern end of Southampton Water on the South Coast of Great Britain; it is approximately two miles west of Southampton in the county of Hampshire, just outside the New Forest.

Please note that the car park is on the far side of the Tollbridge (the Mill's dam) from the Mill, and a toll (currently 1.00) is payable for taking a car over the Tollbridge. The car park can be also be approached from opposite side of the river, near St Mary's church, Eling; thus avoiding the toll.

Start in the cemetery car park, head back towards the road, turn left to cross the toll bridge. Turn left to follow the gravel path adjacent to the river, over a large wooden bridge, then left towards the first boarded section of path. Once across a small wooden bridge the path becomes gravel again. Negotiate 2 kissing gates and continue on to the next boarded section, up a steep ramp and back through the cemetery to the car park.

Additional notes:

For panoramic views of Southampton container port and Test estuary and for those with younger children-a small pirate ship play area, follow the gravel track (N.B no parking available on this track) opposite the cemetery car park.

Mill & cafe closed Mondays & Tuesdays.

This route has been tested with a wheel chair but assistance may be necessary on the steep ramp. The path is also narrow in places.

A pleasant river walk

I followed the brown signs for the Eling Tide Mill and this brought me to the cemetery car park on the left.
This is just before you go across the toll road. From here I followed the route above, which made the walk
easy to find. This is a pleasant walk by the river which is suitable for wheelchairs and buggies.
