Caledonian Canal: Fort Augustus - Kytra Lock

LOCALITY: Fort Augustus, Invernessshire
DISTANCE: 5 miles (8.05 km)
FACILITIES: There & back

GRADIENT: Mostly flat
OS MAP: Loch Lochy & Glen Roy

Walk description:

This walk is along the old towpath on the Caledonian Canal. The walk starts in the village of Fort Augustus and goes to the Kytra Lock.

With the canal on one side of the path and the scenic River Oich on the other, there are many beautiful views.

The towpath is broad and firm all the way, so is suitable for buggies and wheelchairs. There is no mud, so no special footwear is required. However, if you go down to the riverside you could be in mud.

There is no complete path on the other bank of the canal, so you return to Fort Augustus by the same path.

Additional notes:

Parking is in the main car park in the centre of Fort Augustus, by the Information Centre.

There is a picnic area at Kytra Lock.
