Walk description:

Drive into Taunton, heading for the railway station, along Priory Bridge Road. Opposite Somerset County Cricket Ground, which is on your left, go into Priory Bridge Road car park. As you turn into the car park go left. In front of you is a building that belongs to the canoe club. The walk start here.

Turn right at this building and walk along the path with the river on your left. You will walk past picnic benches on the right. Continue along the path until you get to the bridge. Turn left here and walk across the bridge.

Once across the bridge, turn right and you will walk by Firepool Weir. This part of the walk is made up of a compact gravel path. At the end of this path turn right, and walk across a bridge that goes across the canal.

From here the terrain is a solid tarmac path. Continue along the path. On your right you will walk past a children wood. Keep walking along this path, along side the canal. You will walk under several bridges along the route.

Keep walking along the path until you come to a wooden bridge that goes across the canal. From here you have several options.

1) Continue along the canal path towards Bridgewater. The path however is no longer a tarmac path. Instead it is made up of compact gravel.
2) Turn around and retrace your steps back to the car park.
3) Turn left, and then go across the bridge.

If you take the third option, walk across the bridge heading towards Monkton. At the end of the bridge, turn left and walk back along the opposite side of the canal. You will walk along a narrow road that is closed to traffic except for access. Walk along the road and you will come to a small moor holding for canal boats.

Walk past here and this will lead you to a pathway for walkers and cyclists. Keep walking, and you will come to houses on your right. From here the path is made up of a compact gravel and small stone pathway. It is slightly bumpy in places but still easy to go along.

At the end of this path, turn right along a tarmac pavement by some houses. Take your first left by number thirty two. Walk straight on until you get to a turning on your left. Turn left here and walk along Waterleaze towards a roundabout.

At the roundabout you will see the Crown Medical Centre on your left. Turn left here and walk along Venture Way. Walk along the pavement and go across the bridge. When you get to the other side of the bridge, cross to the other side of the road. In front of you is the entrance back on to the canal path.

Go down the slope, which is the only slope on the walk. You will then be back on the path you started on, heading back to the car park.

Additional notes:

This is a pleasant walk along the canal. There are toilets in the car park at the beginning of the walk.

There are eating facilities in Taunton Town centre which is not far from the car park. Instead of turning right at the beginning of the walk, turn left along side the river.
