Walk description:

The Bowood Gardens and estate are steeped in history and they are a wonderful place to explore. The present Marquis of Lansdowne opened the house and gardens to the public in 1975 and has maintained and improved Bowoods many magnificent features over the last 30 years.

Bowood House and Gardens can be found on the A4 between Chippenham and Calne. Whichever direction you are coming from, simply follow the brown tourist signs - for sat nav users SN11 0LZ.

Please bear in mind that there is an entrance fee to the garden, please check their web site (details below) to view current rates. Please don't let the entrance fee put you off, we loved the gardens so much that we brought a season ticket and have already gone back for another visit!

We are not recommending a specific route as there are lots of paths that you can explore throughout the estate, however we really loved the walk by the lake, the views are beautiful and our daughter loved exploring all the little nooks and crannies. Most of the paths are gravel and we had no trouble with an all terrain buggy. I saw other people with standard pushchairs and they didn't seem to be having any issues using the paths. The path was a bit steep in places but if you are relatively fit or have an able bodied companion you should not have any problems.

Additional notes:

There is plenty of parking available and there are designated disabled spaces towards the front of the car park.

There are plenty of toilets within the estate, however I think most of them would be a challenge for those who would need to transfer directly from a wheelchair to the toilet seat. This is due to steps and narrow door ways.

Included in the entrance price is access to a fantastic adventure playground and soft play area. My daughter spent hours playing here! There is play equipment for children of all ages.

There is a cafe at the start of the walk and various refreshments kiosks within the estate. Many people take picnics and on our second visit so did we!

I would recommend that you refer to their web site before making your trip to find out more about opening times, disabled facilities, prices and general information http://www.bowood-house.co.uk/
