Walk description:

This is a lovely walk from Chippenham Town Bridge and goes through Monkton park and around the golf course and riverside, before looping back to the park and bridge.

Park in any of the car parks in town and make your way towards the Town Bridge, this can be found opposite Superdrug. From here follow the blue Cycle Route 4 signs towards Calne. You will then be walking with your back towards Superdrug and the high street and the river will be on your left.

The path is tarmac and very flat. Follow the path through the park until you come to a cross roads. Take the path to the left and the bridge over the river. Once you have crossed the bridge turn right and continue on the path. On the left your will see the leisure centre and a play park for under 5's. The play park is very well kept and my daughter really loved playing here.

Follow the tarmac path alongside the river (the river will be on your right) and you will have open grassland to your left. You will come to another fork in the road and you need to veer right. You will see a small tea shop on the left, which is also the reception for crazy golf and the Par 3 course. Just before the bridge you will need to take the path to the left which is sign posted Cycle Route 4. The terrain here turns to compacted gravel. You will still have the river on the right and the gold course on the left. Please take care here if you have older toddlers walking as they could easily fall in the river.

This path will take you straight up to the cycle route. Go straight on, which will take you around the river walk - the terrain here is mud and grass. If you go left this will take you on a shorter route back to Monkton Park and the town bridge and avoid the grass and mud terrain. If you are using a wheelchair you may wish to assess the terrain of the river route before heading off. We used a normal pushchair and didn't have any problems. I imagine that this part of the path could get quite muddy in wet weather.

Follow the riverside path all the way to the cycle path. The terrain will then become small grit. Take the path to the left and you will be walking back towards Monkton Park. Follow the signs to Chippenham town centre. The path brings you out by a Day Centre. Turn left and walk along the pavement until you reach the top of Monkton park. Walk toward the Tea Shop and take the path to the right and follow this all the way back to the play park.

Retrace your steps to the Town Bridge.

Additional notes:

There are plenty of benches, picnic benches and bins throughout the park. This is also an ideal walk for those with dogs.

We spotted plenty of wildlife, swans, ducks, birds, butterflies and cows. Plenty of things to keep older children occupied.

Chippenham town centre has a variety of different shops for refreshments.
