Walk description:

The Ashridge Estate is a large area of ancient woodland and downland on the top of the Chilterns escarpment. It is 3 miles north of the A41 between Tring and Berkhamstead. It is off the B4506 from Northchurch (to Ringshall and Dagnall), or off the A489 from Dunstable.

There is car parking, a visitor centre, and toilets. Refreshments are also available. There are two routes with a firm surface and no stiles, gates or other obstructions. Both start near the Visitor Centre.

The Duncombe Terrace trail is a partially surfaced trail. It is a two mile trail through woodland, with a gentle gradient towards the end. It can be muddy in wet weather. There is also a flat firm surface trail, which is a one mile circular route around Meadley�s Meadow.

For those wanting to explore there are many natural �challenging� paths but you must not use the National Trust self-drive mobility scooters to explore these.


Additional notes:

The Estate open all year round, from 8am until dusk. Self-drive mobility vehicles are available free (2-5pm) to take you along the two trails but booking is advisable 01442 851227. (donations welcome). Training is provided.

Public and disabled toilets are available (RADAR key).

The Visitor Centre and Tea Room are open daily (12-5pm) from mid-March to mid-December. The Visitor Centre is open every day, the Tea Room is closed on Mondays.

Dogs are welcome but must be kept under close control.

The Visitor centre is at the end of Monument Drive which is off the B4506 between Berkhamsted and Ringshall.

Buses from Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and Dunstable stop 1/2 mile from the entrance. Call 0870 6082608 for bus times.

There are lots of places to sit and rest across the estate.
