Walk description:

Start the walk at the Canal Basin at the Encore pub on the corner of Bridge Street and Waterside. On the opposite side is the Bancroft, which in past times was Common Land where sheep and pigs grazed. Next is the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, (currently being refurbished). Pass the row of 18th century houses on the right then cross the road and walk through Avonbank Gardens. Within the gardens there is a Brass Rubbing Centre with shop and tea room. Turn left out of the gardens and into the Churchyard of Holy Trinity Church, which houses Shakespeares grave. It is necessary to retrace your steps at this point as the footbridge across the river has steps.

On reaching the Encore pub turn right across Clopton Bridge (Tourist Information is on the other side of the road) then onto Tramway Bridge past Coxs Yard. Turn right along the river and follow the path to the far end of the Recreation Ground, where you will see fine views of the town, theatre and church.

Additional notes:

The route is on good surfaces for virtually the whole way. There are several car parks in the town, some free to Blue Badge holders, others not. There are (disabled) toilets opposite the Bancoft, within Avonbank Gardens, at Tourist Information and at the Recreation grounds. There are a number of tea rooms, cafes and restaurants along the route.
