King Alfreds Trail - Pewsey Wharf to Wilcot Village

DISTANCE: 3 miles (4.83 km)
FACILITIES: There & back, Parking, Pub

GRADIENT: Quite steep in places
OS MAP: Marlborough & Savernake Forest

Walk description:

Start your walk from the Pewsey Wharf car park which is just outside Pewsey on the A345. The Pewsey Wharf car park is opposite St Francis School. (SN9 5NT).

With the canal in front of you, take the path to the right which goes underneath the A345.

Walk along the canal path until you get to Bristos Bridge (115). You will need to leave the canal path and go through the gate onto the road. Please take care here as the surface is a bit slippy.

Cross over the bridge and head back onto the canal path. Once again take care going down the slope. The track here is not as wide and in places it is grass rather than compacted stone.

When you get to the Wilcot Bridge you need to go under the bridge and then leave the canal path by the path on your right. There is a steep slope here. Cross over the bridge into the village and then you will take the track almost immediately on your right. You will have the grassed area on your left.

Walk past the grassed area and onto the road. You will come to a T junction. Turn left, passing several houses and eventually you will come to the beautiful church of Wilcot.

Here you have two options:
Retrace your steps back to the Wharf
Walk back to the T junction and instead of turning left keep walking along the road until you reach the Golden Swan Inn. There is a bus stop here that will take you back to the Wharf.

Additional notes:

There is a charge for using the car park. 1 for 2 hours (September 2008).

I completed this walk with an all terrain buggy. I think a normal pushchair would struggle with this.

I would not try this walk with a hand powered wheelchair due to the steep slopes and path surface. A motorised chair or tramper should have no problems.

There is a lovely pub in Wilcot called the Golden Swan Inn. See above the directions on how to reach this from the church in Wilcot.
